Fish

Fish is a raw resource caught through the Fishing skill. It is one of the primary gathering resources in Kintara and feeds directly into the Cooking skill.

The game's original generic Fish was renamed Herring when Fishing became a full skill — the same item, just under a new name. There are now eight fish species, each with its own Fishing level, bait, and water.

Catching fish

Each species needs its own bait, and one bait is consumed per successful catch. Casting only works at a live fishing spot — spots rotate around each body of water every 2–5 minutes.

Species Location Fishing level Catch XP
Herring The Pond 1 125
Trout Whisperwood 6 130
Bass The Shores (south of the buoys) 13 135
Tuna The Shores (north of the buoys) 20 140
Swordfish The Deep (raft-only water at The Shores) 28 145
Parrotfish The Sunken Isles (the Coral Reef) 32 150
Grouper The Sunken Isles (around the wreck) 36 155
Fangtooth The Sunken Isles (the trench) 40 160

The Shores itself is open to players of every level — what is gated is the catch, by the Fishing level of each species. Emberstone requires Total Level 25 to enter, and its lava pits yield Molten Rock (not fish, 125 Fishing XP per haul) — lava fishing requires the Fire-Resistant Fishing Rod. The Sunken Isles, the open sea east of The Shores, has no level gate either, but it can only be reached on a Wooden Raft, and the raft has to stay in your bag while you fish there. The Shores, The Sunken Isles and Emberstone are all closed to free accounts (those holding under 1,000 $KINS), so free accounts can fish The Pond and Whisperwood only.

Cooking

Raw fish cannot be consumed directly. Take it to a Roast Pit to cook it — each species cooks into its own food item (Herring cooks into Cooked Herring, documented at Cooked Herring). Each species needs the same Cooking level as its Fishing level (Trout 6, Bass 13, Tuna 20, Swordfish 28, Parrotfish 32, Grouper 36, Fangtooth 40). Every cook consumes 1 Wood and grants Cooking XP unless the fish burns into a worthless burnt version, which pays none — the burn chance starts at 30% at low Cooking levels and slides down to 5% at level 40.
