Iron Armor Set is the first armor tier in Kintara, consisting of four protective pieces that work together to absorb incoming damage through a shield pool system. A complete set grants +20 shield bonus and requires Combat 15 to equip any piece.
Iron armor represents the entry into serious combat preparation — the first real defense against high-level threats.
Complete Set
The Iron Armor Set consists of four pieces, each craftable separately:
| Piece | Smithing req | Shield bonus | Durability | Cost (per piece) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Helmet | 14 | +5 | 1,000 | 2 iron ingot + 12 molten rock + 2 brute horn |
| Iron Body Armor | 20 | +5 | 1,000 | 4 iron ingot + 16 molten rock + 2 brute horn |
| Iron Legguards | 18 | +5 | 1,000 | 3 iron ingot + 14 molten rock + 2 brute horn |
| Iron Boots | 16 | +5 | 1,000 | 1 iron ingot + 10 molten rock + 2 brute horn |
- Total cost for full set:** 10 iron ingots + 52 molten rock + 8 brute horn
Set Bonus
Wearing all four pieces together grants:
- **+20 shield total** (+5 from each piece)
- **4,000 durability combined** (1,000 per piece)
- **100% coverage** (head, torso, legs, feet)
Partial sets still provide shield bonuses — each piece adds its +5 bonus independently.
Shield System
Iron armor participates in Kintara's points-pool shield system:
| Configuration | Shield value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| No armor | 100 points | Base shield before wearing any armor |
| 1 Iron piece | 105 points | +5 from one armor slot |
| 2 Iron pieces | 110 points | +10 from two armor slots |
| Full Iron set (4 pieces) | 120 points | +20 total (all four pieces) |
| Full Silver set (4 pieces) | 140 points | +40 total (comparison to higher tier) |
Shield absorbs damage before your HP is touched. It does not regenerate on its own — restore it with Shield Potions.
Durability & Repair
Each armor piece has **1,000 durability**. Every hit you take costs 1 durability point on each piece you're wearing.
| Scenario | Durability cost | Time to break (solo mob) |
|---|---|---|
| One piece equipped | 1 per hit | 1,000 hits |
| Full set equipped | 4 per hit (all pieces drain simultaneously) | 250 hits |
A full Iron set wears 4× faster than a single piece because all pieces degrade with every hit.
- Repair at any smithy** (Grimjaw in Frostmere, Harun in Dunes West):
- **Repair cost:** ~60% of forge cost, scaled by durability loss (minimum 1 ingot)
- **Example:** Iron Helmet (2 ingots to craft) at 50% durability ≈ 1 ingot to repair
Crafting Progression
Iron Armor Set sits in the middle of the armor progression:
| Tier | Armor type | Shield per piece | Combat req | Smithing req (average) | Next tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Copper | N/A | N/A | N/A (no armor tier) | Iron |
| Mid | Iron | +5 | 15 | 17 | Silver |
| High | Silver | +10 | 25 | 26 | — |
Iron armor is a significant power jump from wearing no armor. A full Iron set provides 20 shield — roughly 200 HP worth of damage absorption.
Sourcing Materials
To craft a complete Iron Armor Set:
| Material | Amount | Farming location | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Ingot | 10 | Smelt 60 Iron Ore + 60 Coal per ingot batch (100 ingots total input) | ~6-8 smelts to get 10 ingots |
| Molten Rock | 52 | Fish at Emberstone lava pits | Common drop; ~1-2 per cast |
| Brute Horn | 8 | Kill Magma Brute at Emberstone | 1 in 5 drop rate; ~40 kills |
- Total farming time:** 2-4 hours depending on efficiency
Trading & Marketplace
Iron Armor pieces can only be sold or traded when **undamaged** (100% durability):
- **Damaged pieces:** Cannot list on marketplace, cannot player-trade
- **Repair first:** Repair at any smithy to restore to "like new" condition
- **Undamaged pieces:** Fully tradeable and valuable
- **Damaged items returned:** 278 damaged Iron pieces were returned to owners during the marketplace overhaul
Combat Considerations
| Scenario | Details |
|---|---|
| Shield absorption | Reduces incoming HP damage by absorbing it into shield pool first |
| Heat immunity | Does NOT protect from The Dunes heat (heat bypasses shield) |
| Durability drain rate | Full set loses 4 durability per hit (all 4 pieces drain simultaneously) |
| PvP readiness | A full Iron set is competitive at mid-game level; Silver is superior |
| Partial sets | Still provide shield bonuses; no penalty for wearing incomplete set |
- Set Acquisition Timeline ==
| Progression milestone | Details |
|---|---|
| Combat 15 required | Before you can equip ANY Iron armor piece |
| Iron Helmet first | Easiest to craft (Smithing 14, cheapest cost) |
| Complete mid-tier set | After crafting all 4 pieces; represent 2-4 hours of farming |
| Ready for Silver | Continue farming ingots/materials for Silver armor (Smithing 24+) |
Most players craft Iron Helmet → Boots → Legguards → Body Armor in that order (cheapest to most expensive).
