Smithing was overhauled in the Dunes update (v5.3). The old single "Lvl 2 tool" upgrade track has been replaced with a full copper → iron → silver ore-tier progression covering both tools and armor. There is no Total Level requirement to start Smithing — each recipe is gated only by your Smithing level. Forging is identical at Grimjaw's anvil in Frostmere or Harun's forge in Dunes West; armor is crafted at Kaziir the Armoursmith's armoury in The Dunes. The Dunes are closed to free accounts (holding under 1,000 $KINS), so they smith at Frostmere.
Unlocking
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| No unlock gate | Smithing has no Total Level requirement — each recipe is gated by your Smithing level (see tables below) |
| Forge locations | Grimjaw in Frostmere · Harun the Forgewright in Dunes West (identical service) · armor at Kaziir the Armoursmith in The Dunes |
Smelting
Smelting converts raw ore into ingots. No Smithing level requirement to smelt. Smelts are priced per ingot and can be batched ×1, ×5, or ×10 (10 max per batch).
| Ingot | Materials per ingot | XP per ingot | Time per ingot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper Ingot | 10 Stone + 5 Coal | 10 XP | ~1 second |
| Iron Ingot | 6 Iron Ore + 6 Coal | 22 XP | ~1 second |
| Silver Ingot | 4 Silver Ore + 8 Coal | 30 XP | ~1 second |
A ×10 batch therefore pays 100/220/300 XP for copper/iron/silver. (The 450 XP figure previously listed for silver was never the rate — the old fixed pour paid 300.)
Forging Tools
Tools are crafted from scratch — no base tool is consumed. Forging now shares the same ~1-second-per-unit pace as smelting (reduced from the earlier 30-second cooldown).
| Tier | Tool | Smithing level | Materials | XP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Copper | Copper Axe | 0 | 20 Copper Ingots + 400 Wood | 400 XP |
| Copper Sword | 3 | 25 Copper Ingots + 600 Wood | 400 XP | |
| Copper Pickaxe | 7 | 28 Copper Ingots + 850 Wood | 400 XP | |
| Iron | Iron Axe | 10 | 40 Iron Ingots + 1,000 Wood | 750 XP |
| Iron Sword | 13 | 55 Iron Ingots + 1,300 Wood | 750 XP | |
| Iron Pickaxe | 17 | 60 Iron Ingots + 1,600 Wood | 750 XP | |
| Silver | Silver Axe | 20 | 80 Silver Ingots + 2,000 Wood | 700 XP |
| Silver Sword | 23 | 90 Silver Ingots + 2,500 Wood | 700 XP | |
| Silver Pickaxe | 27 | 100 Silver Ingots + 3,000 Wood | 700 XP |
Tool Stats
| Tool tier | Sword damage | Durability |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | 5 | — (never wears) |
| Copper | 23 | 4,000 uses |
| Iron | 26 | 4,000 uses |
| Silver | 30 | 4,000 uses |
Strength Potion adds a flat +10 damage on top of any tier.
Tool tiers do not change gathering yield or XP — every tier gathers 1 per swing and grants the same skill XP. What a higher tier buys is swing speed: copper swings 5% faster, iron 10% faster, and silver 15% faster than the starter tool.
Armor Crafting
Armor is crafted at Kaziir's armoury in The Dunes, not at the tool forges. Worn armor is repaired at the forges (Grimjaw or Harun).
Iron Armor (requires Combat 15 to wear)
| Piece | Smithing level | Materials | XP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helmet | 14 | 40 Iron Ingots + 40 Molten Rock + 5 Brute Horn | 280 XP |
| Body | 20 | 50 Iron Ingots + 50 Molten Rock + 10 Brute Horn | 350 XP |
| Legguards | 18 | 50 Iron Ingots + 50 Molten Rock + 10 Brute Horn | 350 XP |
| Boots | 16 | 25 Iron Ingots + 25 Molten Rock + 2 Brute Horn | 175 XP |
| Full set | — | 165 Iron Ingots + 165 Molten Rock + 27 Brute Horn | 1,155 XP |
Armor XP is 7 XP per ingot in the recipe.
Silver Armor (requires Combat 25 to wear)
| Piece | Smithing level | Materials | XP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helmet | 24 | 80 Silver Ingots + 60 Molten Rock + 15 Brute Horn | 560 XP |
| Body | 30 | 100 Silver Ingots + 80 Molten Rock + 25 Brute Horn | 700 XP |
| Legguards | 28 | 75 Silver Ingots + 70 Molten Rock + 25 Brute Horn | 525 XP |
| Boots | 26 | 40 Silver Ingots + 20 Molten Rock + 10 Brute Horn | 280 XP |
| Full set | — | 295 Silver Ingots + 230 Molten Rock + 75 Brute Horn | 2,065 XP |
Armor durability: 2,500 uses per piece (rebalanced from 1,000 in a 2026-08-31 update) — each worn piece spends 1 durability per hit taken. Repair cost is roughly 60% of the original craft cost, scaled to damage taken (minimum 1 ingot).
Batch Crafting
- Batching applies to stackable smelts; forged tools and armor craft one per request.
- Each unit takes roughly 1 second — a ×10 batch of smelting takes roughly 10 seconds.
- If materials run out mid-batch, crafting stops and tells you — no partial-consumption surprises.
- Closing the forge window cancels anything not yet started, at no material cost.
Bank Stacking
Identical tools, swords, and armor pieces now stack in the bank — up to 10,000 per stack. Only true matches stack (same item, same durability/wear level), so no durability data is lost by stacking. Right-click a stack to split it out one piece at a time. Carried bags are unaffected — gear still takes one slot each out in the world.
The guild bank (see Guilds) also accepts gear as of a recent Guilds update — swords, armor, pickaxes, and axes can now be deposited alongside gold and materials, with wear preserved exactly as deposited and same-condition items stacking the same way as a personal bank.
Marketplace Restrictions
Only undamaged (full-durability) tools and armor can be listed on the Marketplace. Direct player trades accept worn gear. Repair at Grimjaw or Harun to restore a piece to full durability before listing it.
Tips
- Smelt ingots in bulk before forging sessions — at about 1 second per ingot with ×10 batching, stockpiling is nearly instant now compared to the old 30-second rate.
- Iron and Silver tools require reaching the relevant Smithing level before you can forge them — level up gradually through Copper tools/armor first.
- Armor grants real XP on craft, so a full set is worth forging for the XP even if you don't plan to wear it yet.
- Keep gear undamaged if you intend to sell it on the Marketplace — repair before listing.
- Don't confuse Starter sword's low 5 damage for a bug — it's an intentional correction meant to make the Copper upgrade feel meaningful.
- Tool tiers buy swing speed only — pick the tier your Smithing level allows, but don't expect bigger yields or more XP per gather.
