Smithing (Skill)
Activity Smelting ore into ingots, forging Copper/Iron/Silver tools and armor at Grimjaw (Frostmere) or Harun (Dunes West)
Tool required Frostmere forge · Dunes West forge
XP per action Varies by item (see tables below)
Max level At least 30 (exact new cap unconfirmed since the Total Level cap rose from 30 to 40)
Counts to Total Level Yes (updated — see note below)

Smithing was overhauled in the Dunes update (v5.3). The old single "Lvl 2 tool" upgrade track has been replaced with a full copper → iron → silver ore-tier progression covering both tools and armor. Smithing unlocks at Total Level 20 and is forged identically at Grimjaw's anvil in Frostmere or Harun's forge in Dunes West.

Update: This page previously described the old "Lvl 2 Axe/Pickaxe/Sword via Metal" system, which counted Smithing as a bonus track that did not count toward Total Level. That system has been retired. Smithing is now one of the 6 core tracked skills (alongside Fishing, Cooking, Combat, Mining, Woodcutting), and unlocking it requires Total Level 20 — confirm in-game whether Smithing itself now contributes back to your Total Level.

Armor Crafting

Armor is crafted under Kaziir's guidance and forged at the same blacksmiths as tools.

Iron Armor (requires Combat 15 to wear)

Piece Smithing level Materials XP
Helmet 14 40 Iron Ingots + 40 Molten Rock + 5 Brute Horn 400 XP
Body 20 50 Iron Ingots + 50 Molten Rock + 10 Brute Horn 500 XP
Legguards 18 50 Iron Ingots + 50 Molten Rock + 10 Brute Horn 500 XP
Boots 16 25 Iron Ingots + 25 Molten Rock + 2 Brute Horn 250 XP
Full set 165 Iron Ingots + 165 Molten Rock + 27 Brute Horn 1,650 XP

Silver Armor (requires Combat 25 to wear)

Piece Smithing level Materials XP
Helmet 24 80 Silver Ingots + 60 Molten Rock + 15 Brute Horn 800 XP
Body 28 ~6 Silver Ingots + ~26 Molten Rock + 4 Brute Horn <ref>Figure as recorded — unusually low relative to Helmet/Boots cost. Verify in-game before treating as final.</ref> 1,000 XP
Legguards 26 ~5 Silver Ingots + ~24 Molten Rock + 4 Brute Horn <ref>Figure as recorded — unusually low relative to Helmet/Boots cost. Verify in-game before treating as final.</ref> 750 XP
Boots 24 40 Silver Ingots + 20 Molten Rock + 10 Brute Horn 400 XP
Full set ~18 Silver Ingots + Molten Rock/Brute Horn (see note) 2,950 XP
Verify: Silver Body and Legguards ingot costs look out of line with the rest of the table (far lower than Helmet or Boots despite higher XP). Recommend re-checking these at the forge before treating them as confirmed.

Armor durability: 1,000 uses per piece. Repair cost is roughly 60% of the original craft cost, scaled to damage taken (minimum 1 ingot).

Batch Crafting

Update: The forge now supports batch crafting — pick a quantity (×1, ×5, or ×10) and the anvil works through it automatically instead of requiring a click per craft.
  • Each individual craft still takes its full 30 seconds — a ×10 batch takes 10x as long, not shorter.
  • If materials run out mid-batch, crafting stops and tells you — no partial-consumption surprises.
  • Closing the forge window cancels anything not yet started, at no material cost.

Bank Stacking

Identical tools, swords, and armor pieces now stack in the bank — up to 10,000 per stack. Only true matches stack (same item, same durability/wear level), so no durability data is lost by stacking. Right-click a stack to split it out one piece at a time. Carried bags are unaffected — gear still takes one slot each out in the world.

Marketplace Restrictions

Only undamaged tools and armor can be listed or traded on the Marketplace, since durability isn't visible in listing or trade UI. Repair at Grimjaw or Harun to restore a piece to "like new" before trading it.

Tips

  • Smelt ingots in bulk before forging sessions — batch crafting eats through ingredients fast now that you're not clicking per craft.
  • Iron and Silver tools require reaching the relevant Smithing level before you can forge them — level up gradually through Copper tools/armor first.
  • Armor now grants real XP on craft (previously a dead end), so don't skip crafting a full set purely for the XP even if you don't plan to wear it yet.
  • Keep gear undamaged if you intend to trade or sell it — repair before listing.
