Mining is the skill for extracting Stone, Coal, Iron Ore, and Silver Ore from rock nodes using a Pickaxe. Its ores and coal feed the Blacksmith Forge at Frostmere (and Harun's forge in Dunes West), so it pairs naturally with Woodcutting.
Training
Get a Pickaxe from the Old Miner in the Mines on the Mainland if you don't already have one, then equip it in a hotbar slot and mine rock nodes. What a rock gives depends on the region, not the node: Frostmere rocks yield Iron Ore, rocks across The Dunes yield Silver Ore, and rocks everywhere else — the Mainland, The Mine, The Pond, Whisperwood, the Wilderness realms and Emberstone — yield Stone or Coal. Roughly one rock in four is dark-veined and carries Coal; Emberstone's basalt spires are the exception and are always plain Stone.
The starter Pickaxe does nothing in The Dunes — mining there needs a forged pickaxe (copper or better).
XP is granted when a node is fully depleted, not per swing:
How a rock works
Each swing gives 1 of whatever the rock holds, and the XP lands on the swing that breaks it. How many swings depends on the rock's footprint:
| Rock footprint | Swings to mine out | Material |
|---|---|---|
| Single tile | 6 | 6 |
| Two tiles | 7 | 7 |
| 2x2 cluster | 10 | 10 |
Partial work is remembered, so you can leave a half-mined rock and come back to it. A mined-out rock reappears 30-60 seconds later; if somebody is standing on the tile the respawn waits for them to move off (up to five minutes past its due time).
| Ore | XP per depleted node | Where | Mining level required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stone | 20 | Wilderness | None |
| Coal | 25 | Wilderness | None |
| Iron Ore | 50 | Frostmere | 5 |
| Silver Ore | 90 | The Dunes (all regions) | 20 (and a forged pickaxe) |
Pickaxe tiers
No pickaxe tier changes yield or XP — every tier gathers 1 per swing and grants the same XP. Higher tiers swing faster instead: copper 5% faster, iron 10% faster, silver 15% faster than the base Pickaxe. A gathering relic socketed into the pickaxe is the one thing that does change the numbers: relics can add a chance of +1 ore, an extra copy or a doubled swing, plus flat gathering XP and swing-speed bonuses. See Relics.
The iron pickaxe (the Lvl 2 Pickaxe) is forged from scratch at Grimjaw's Blacksmith Forge in Frostmere or at Dunes West for 60 Iron Ingots + 1,600 Wood, requiring Smithing 17 — there is no Total Level requirement. See Smithing for the full copper → iron → silver ladder.
Pickaxe durability
Forged pickaxes (copper, iron and silver) have 4,000 total durability and spend 1 durability per mining swing, whatever the rock's size. Swinging a pickaxe at a tree costs no durability. The free starter Pickaxe never wears. A pickaxe that reaches 0 durability is destroyed, so repair it first — Grimjaw in Frostmere and Harun in Dunes West charge up to 60% of the forge bill, scaled to how much durability is missing.
EXP rates
Rates depend on which ore you mine (20–90 XP per depleted node) and how fast you clear nodes — a faster pickaxe tier clears nodes sooner but pays the same XP per node. Silver Ore in The Dunes is the best XP per node once you reach Mining 20.
Rare drops
- Golem pet — 1 in 16,000 chance per depleted Silver Ore rock in The Dunes.
- Mining outfit — the Mining Hard Hat drops 1 in 5,000 from rocks in The Mine, and the Mining Vest and Mining Trousers drop 1 in 200,000 each from any depleted rock; the Obsidian Cape drops 1 in 10,000 from rocks in Emberstone. Wearing the full Mining kit — hat, vest and trousers — while owning every piece pays +5% Mining XP.
- Free accounts (holding under 1,000 $KINS) never receive pet or outfit drops, and trade-locked accounts never receive outfit drops.
Uses of mined materials
| Material | Uses |
|---|---|
| Stone | Copper Ingots at the Blacksmith Forge (10 per ingot) · Shield Potion purchase cost at The Alchemist · shacks (500 Wood + 200 Stone) · firepits · some Chest Vending Machine chests |
| Coal | Every smelting recipe at the Blacksmith Forge · Strength Potion purchase cost at The Alchemist · firepits · some Chest Vending Machine chests |
| Iron Ore / Silver Ore | Smelted into ingots at the Blacksmith Forge for tools and armor — see Smithing |
Tips
- Ore depends on the region — plan trips to the Wilderness for Stone/Coal, Frostmere for Iron Ore (Mining 5), and The Dunes for Silver Ore (Mining 20, forged pickaxe).
- Upgrading your pickaxe tier speeds up your swings — it does not change yield or XP, so the payoff is time saved, not bigger nodes.
