Old Wick
Role
Location The Sunken Isles — the lighthouse isle, in the north-east
Services Sells and trades nothing. Explains the sea: its fishing grounds and levels, the sharks, and what happens to a player without a raft.
Dialogue "Mind the gravel, it's the only dry floor I own. Thirty years I've kept this lamp lit, and a raft is still the only way anybody turns up. Go on, then. Ask what you came to ask."

Old Wick is the keeper of the lighthouse at The Sunken Isles. He starts on the gravel south of his light and wanders the lighthouse isle in a yellow oilskin coat and sou'wester, white-bearded and in sea boots, with a storm lantern in his hand. Click him and your character walks over to talk.

He sells and trades nothing: he is the sea's guide, the one voice out there who explains how it works.

The Sunken Isles is a paid realm: free-to-play accounts can't enter it, so they can't reach Old Wick.

What he tells you

Ask him What he says
What bites out here? Three waters, three fish: Parrotfish over the reef, Grouper round the wreck, Fangtooth down in the trench. The open water between them holds nothing. You'll want the Level 2 Fishing Rod, and "Maren on the Shores dock ties the lures: a Reef Jig, a Diving Plug, a Glow Jig. Nobody sells them out here."
How good do I have to be? "The reef won't give you a thing before Fishing 32. The wreck wants 36. The trench wants 40, and it knows when you're bluffing."
Is the deep water safe? "Safe as long as you keep moving." Sharks hunt round the wreck and over the trench and go for whatever sits still: "Shift your raft a tile now and then and they lose interest." A line dropped into their water from just outside it is no safer: "they follow it back to whoever's holding the rod."
And if I lose my raft? None of the isles can be walked off, so "a hand with no raft gets ferried back to the Shores dock, wet and embarrassed." To choose your own way home, "steer for the two lanterns on the west edge."
Ever pull up anything strange? He hints at the sea's rare catches: "A crown of coral came off the reef once. The wreck still gives back its wheel and its anchor. And the trench... a trident, I've seen with my own eyes." The other thing he only heard about, from a man who rode it home: "it had more arms than he could count."
