Smithing (Skill)
Activity Forging Lvl 2 tools at the Frostmere anvil
Tool required Frostmere forge
XP per action 750 per forge
Max level 30
Counts to Total Level No

Smithing is the skill for upgrading tools to Lvl 2 at the Blacksmith Forge in Frostmere, operated by Grimjaw. It is the only skill that does not count toward Total Level, making it a bonus progression track rather than a core requirement.

Training

Smithing is done at Grimjaw's Blacksmith Forge in Frostmere (Total Level 20 required to enter). Each forge action takes approximately 60 seconds and gives 750 Smithing XP. You can forge the same item repeatedly as long as you hold enough materials and inventory space.

EXP rates

750 Smithing XP per forge (1 forge every 60 seconds)

Time period Smithing XP
Per minute 750 XP
Per hour 45,000 XP
Per day 1,080,000 XP

See EXP Calculator for a full comparison across all skills.

What you can forge

Tool Upgrades to Metal Wood Coal Effect
Axe Lvl 2 Axe 500 1,000 500 Double Woodcutting yield and XP
Pickaxe Lvl 2 Pickaxe 500 1,000 500 Double Mining yield and XP
Sword Lvl 2 Sword 750 1,500 500 Double Combat XP per kill

Materials needed per hour

Based on 60 forges per hour using the cheapest item (Lvl 2 Axe or Lvl 2 Pickaxe):

Material Per forge Per hour (60 forges)
Metal 500 30,000
Wood 1,000 60,000
Coal 500 30,000

Tip: Lvl 2 Axe and Lvl 2 Pickaxe cost 200 less Metal per forge than Lvl 2 Sword while giving the same 750 XP — most material-efficient choice for Smithing XP grinding.

Tips

  • Smithing does not count toward Total Level — you do not need it to unlock Frostmere, The Shores, or Emberstone. It purely improves your tool efficiency.
  • Upgrade your Axe and Pickaxe first since doubled gathering yield directly speeds up stockpiling materials for future forges and Traveling Merchant donations.
  • Stock up on Metal, Wood, and Coal before heading to Frostmere — the forge is in the level-gated zone and you want to make multiple forges per trip.
