Woodcutting is the skill for gathering Wood by chopping trees in the Wilderness. Wood is essential for Cooking, Smithing, and purchasing chests from the Chest Vending Machine, making Woodcutting one of the most important early-game skills.
Ultra-rare chance: every tree you fell has a 1 in 150,000 chance to drop Pnut, a rare squirrel companion pet.
Training
Get a free Axe from the Lumberjack on the Mainland if you don't already have one, then equip it in a hotbar slot and chop trees. Trees grow on the Mainland (where you chop your first one), at The Pond, in Whisperwood and in Frostmere — all safe — as well as across the Wilderness realms, which are PvP. Trees have no level requirement — the only upgrade is your axe tier. (Dunes cacti are the exception; see below.)
Each swing yields 1 Wood and a tree always takes 6 swings to fell, so a tree is 6 Wood; the 20 Woodcutting XP is granted when it falls. Part-chopped trees are remembered, and a felled tree regrows 30-60 seconds later (it waits if somebody is standing on the stump). No axe tier changes yield or XP — higher tiers swing faster instead (copper 5%, iron 10%, silver 15% faster).
| Tool | XP per felled tree | Wood per swing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 XP | 1 | Free from the Lumberjack on the Mainland | |
| Copper Axe | 20 XP | 1 | Swings 5% faster. Forged at Grimjaw's Blacksmith Forge in Frostmere or at Dunes West — 20 Copper Ingots + 400 Wood, no Smithing level needed |
| 20 XP | 1 | Swings 10% faster. Forged at Grimjaw's Blacksmith Forge in Frostmere or at Dunes West — 40 Iron Ingots + 1,000 Wood, Smithing 10 | |
| Silver Axe | 20 XP | 1 | Swings 15% faster. Forged at either forge — 80 Silver Ingots + 2,000 Wood, Smithing 20 |
Cacti
Cacti in The Dunes are also chopped with the axe and pay 25 XP per felled cactus. A cactus does not pay per swing the way a tree does: it takes the same 6 swings but drops its material only on the swing that fells it, so one cactus is 1 Cacti, not 6. Cutting one needs Woodcutting 20 and an Iron Axe (Lvl 2 Axe) or Silver Axe — the starter and Copper axes can't cut cacti. Each felled cactus has a 1 in 16,000 chance to drop the Lizard pet and a 1 in 7,500 chance to drop the Lumberjack Trapper Hat.
Rare drops
- Pnut the squirrel — 1 in 150,000 chance per tree felled (cacti count too). Ultra-rare pet companion that follows you everywhere.
- Lizard pet — 1 in 16,000 chance per cactus felled in The Dunes.
- Lumberjack outfit — the Lumberjack Shirt and Lumberjack Trousers drop 1 in 60,000 each from felling trees; the Lumberjack Trapper Hat drops 1 in 7,500 from felling cacti. Wearing the full Lumberjack kit (while owning every piece) pays +5% Woodcutting XP.
- Free accounts (holding under 1,000 $KINS) never receive pet or outfit drops, and trade-locked accounts never receive outfit drops.
EXP rates
XP comes per felled tree (20 XP; 25 per cactus), so rates depend on how quickly you fell trees — a faster axe tier fells trees sooner but pays the same XP per tree. A gathering relic socketed into the axe is the exception: relics can add a chance of +1 Wood, an extra copy or a doubled swing, plus flat gathering XP and swing-speed bonuses. See Relics.
Axe durability
Forged axes have 4,000 total durability and spend 1 durability per swing, regardless of tree size. The free starter Axe never wears.
Uses of Wood
| Use | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cooking fuel | 1 per cook | Used with raw fish or Raw Chicken at roast pits |
| Smithing material | 400–3,000 per tool | Required for all tool forging at Frostmere or Dunes West, scaling with tier |
| Chest Vending Machine purchases | Varies by chest | Part of the price of the Galactic Chest (500 Wood), Demon Chest and Angel Chest (2,500 Wood each) at the time of writing |
| Potions and firepits | 60 per Health Potion · 50 per firepit | Health Potions are bought with Wood at The Alchemist |
| Building a shack | 500 Wood + 200 Stone | The raw-material price when you do not hold a Shack Kit |
Tips
- Bank Wood regularly during Wilderness trips — the Wilderness is a PvP zone and dying means losing your backpack contents.
- Upgrade to the Lvl 2 Axe once you reach Smithing 10 — it swings 10% faster, so every trip finishes sooner. Yield and XP stay the same.
- Chop near rock nodes so you can switch between Woodcutting and Mining in the same trip.
- Every tree has a tiny chance (1 in 150,000) to drop Pnut the squirrel — keep chopping and maybe you'll find him!
